On the morning of October 17, 2023 our beloved, Nelvin Bates (known to some as Legg) was called home to be with the Lord. \n\nNelvin was born on November 9, 1939 in Leighton, Louisiana. She was the eldest of the children born to the late Willie D and Estelle Oliver Jones.\n\nShe attended school at Thomas and Rhône in Shongaloo, Louisiana. She later moved to Houston in her late teens, it was there she met her then-husband, Joseph Bates, with whom she had her beloved daughter and son. Nelvin then joined Macedonia Baptist church in January of 1999. Throughout her life, Nelvin displayed immense strength and resilience, as she battled and triumphed over breast cancer and many other health challenges. These experiences only added to her remarkable character.\n\nNelvin's unconditional love for her children and grandchildren was unwavering. She doted on them, always providing support and guidance. Her children knew they could rely on her, and her grandchildren cherished the moments spent with their loving grandmother. She created lasting memories, and her presence will forever be missed.\n\nNelvin's compassionate spirit and dedication to her family will always be remembered. Her legacy will carry on through her children and grandchildren, who will surely pass down her values and teachings to future generations.\n\nShe is proceeded in death by her parents (Willie D & Estelle Jones) and her siblings Freddie Ray, Gene, Curtis, Jerry, Linda and Jessie Bell Jones \n\nNelvin is survived by her brothers Mack Jones (Lottie) of Ardmore, OK and Charles Jones of Denver, CO. Her daughter, Beverly Legan (James) and son Ferlish Bates of Houston, TX. Her stepchildren Evelyn Ryan Singleton (Marvin), Joe and Roger Ryan (Adeline) of Lake Charles, LA. 5 grandchildren James III (Kaila), Brittany and Joseph Legan, Ra’Joun Johnson and De’Leon Bates. Two great grandchildren, Brayden Johnson and Josiah Legan. And one aunt, Pinkie Lee. With a host of very special nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.\n\nIn this time of grieving, it is important to hold on to the beautiful memories you shared with Nelvin. May her soul rest in peace, knowing that her love will continue to be felt by all those whose lives she touched.
